Pauillac - Château Mouton Rothschild 2012

The domain

Château Mouton-Rothschild is one of the three premier growths located in the commune of Pauillac. It produces one of the most prestigious Bordeaux wines, which bears the same name. It shares this rare distinction with Château Margaux, Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Haut-Brion.

Mouton-Rothschild has been owned by the English branch of the Rothschild family since 1853. It is the only vintage to be promoted to the rank of "Premier Grand Cru classified" in 1973 by the Ministry of Agriculture. Following this, the motto of the Castle was changed from "First I cannot, second does not deign, Sheep am" to "First I am, second I was, Sheep does not change".

It was in 1922 that the young Baron Philippe de Rothschild took charge of the Château. A pioneer, he decided in 1924 to carry out the bottling entirely on the property, while at the time the wine was sold in bulk to the various merchants on the Place de Bordeaux who carried out the bottling themselves. He also asks the illustrator Carlu to create a label for his wine.
