Champagne Brut Nature - The Kid of the Terroir - Romain Henin
The domain
Romain Henin, EL' Rom for friends. He's the kid from the land, the guy from here who has convictions and who wants to realize his dreams. BTS Viti Oeno from Avize in his pocket, he worked for 2 years as a vat room manager at Henri Giraud in Ay. It was following a meeting with Patrick Bouju and Jason Ligas that his interest in organic and biodynamic will impose itself on him as an evidence.
In 2016 he created his 1.20 ha estate with a melting pot of small plots on the right and left, obtained by renting and buying a few ares. This is followed by the conversion of these vines to organic in order to revive the soils exhausted by its predecessors. At the same time, he works on the family estate of 8ha whose philosophy is at odds with his convictions. We can only note the courage or the touch of madness he shows, and this to be in line with himself and his values. During this time he watches his neighbors vinify conventional grapes, while on his side there are no concessions to be made, his first wines will be organic and will be the fruit of his hard work. Its vines are like gardens. Grass cover, fruit trees to loosen the soil and green manure to restore nitrogen naturally. Note that out of 380 ha of Champagne Grand Cru Ay, less than one hectare is certified organic. The road is still long but there is no doubt that Romain will be emulated. In 2021 Romain bursts into the open and treats us to his first champagne from the 2018 harvest (in conversion). Wines without inputs, without artifice that will undoubtedly make you vibrate. Unfortunately, its first 1000 bottles could not satisfy all your enlightened palates, but don't worry, the years to come will have some nice surprises in store for you. Because following the 2021 harvest, he acquired his parents' estate and enlarged his playground for a total area of 8ha. He immediately begins the Bio and Demeter conversion to regenerate the living as quickly as possible.
