'Le Grand' Pinot Noir - Weingut Riehen 2021 Magnum

The domain

The estate was mentioned for the first time in 1328, when the vines still belonged to the Cistercians of the Wettigen monastery. By the 19th century, the Riehen vineyard estate was already known for its role in the local economy and its excellent wines. It was also during this time that several historic buildings were constructed on the site and have been preserved to this day. Over the centuries, the vineyard estate has had various owners and winemakers who have maintained and developed the winemaking tradition in the region.

In 2014, the municipality of Riehen rented out the small vineyard. The bidding was won by Hanspeter Ziereisen and Thomas Jost. They redirected the operation towards the production of quality wines: A rigorous selection in the vineyard, a reduction in yields, spontaneous fermentation, and the gentlest possible aging in the cellar contributed to the success from the very first vintage. Jacqueline and Urs Ullrich took over the Riehen vineyard in August 2018 with Hanspeter Ziereisen. Hanspeter Ziereisen is responsible for production, while Paul Ullrich AG handles distribution and administration. In 2018, Thomas Jost left the vineyard, and in 2019, Silas Weiss was hired as the operations manager. He not only takes care of the vineyard and the cellar but has also become the new face of the estate. Since 2021, he has also been a partial owner of the estate: the Ziereisen family as well as Urs and Jacqueline Ullrich each sold him 20%.
