Tenuta Guado al Tasso DOC Bolgheri Superiore - Antinori 2021
The domain
The Tenuta Guado al Tasso is located in the small but prestigious DOC Bolgheri, on the coast of the upper Maremma, about a hundred kilometers southwest of Florence. The history of this designation is relatively recent: the Bolgheri AOC was approved in 1994 and, since then, it has become an internationally recognized reference point in the Italian and international wine-growing arena.
The estate covers an area of approximately 320 hectares planted with vines, in a beautiful plain surrounded by rolling hills, known as the "Amphitheater of Bolgheri" due to its particular shape.
The noble Della Gherardesca family began practicing viticulture in the late 1600s on their lands in Bolgheri, but things really began to change under the leadership of Guido Alberto Della Gherardesca (1780-1854). He was passionate about viticulture. He was appointed butler to Grand Duke Leopold II and later devoted himself to oenology on the family lands in Maremma.
In the 1930s, the property was inherited by Carlotta Della Gherardesca Antinori (Piero Antinori's mother) and her sister, married to Mario Incisa Della Rocchetta (who received the neighboring Tenuta San Guido).
The vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Vermentino; the latter is cultivated with white and red varieties.
The proximity to the sea provides a mild climate with constant breezes that alleviate the heat of summer and alleviate the harshness of winter, maintaining clear skies and a high level of exposure to sunlight. The alluvial soils of the area, which vary from sandy clay to loamy clay rich in Bolgheri agglomerate (very fine gravel), influence the character and personality of the grape varieties grown and give them a distinct territorial identity.
