Echezeaux Grand Cru - Emmanuel Rouget 2021
The domain
Emmanuel Rouget's wines are among Burgundy's best-kept secrets. Indeed, Rouget is the nephew of the late Henri Jayer, still considered today to be the greatest winemaker in the region in modern times. After Jayer retired in 1996, the estate passed to Rouget, who worked closely with his uncle for the 10 years before his death. Located in Falgey-Echézeaux, its vineyards are mostly located within the Vosne-Romanée, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru and Echézeaux Grand Cru appellations, but also in the Côtes de Nuits-Villages, Savigny- lès-Beaune and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Rouget continues to honor Jayer's classic style, through low yields, the use of cold pre-fermentation maceration and aging the finest wines in 100% new oak. Its approach favoring minimal intervention in the cellar allows the Pinot Noirs to age slowly in oak barrels for a year and a half before being bottled without filtration.
Rouget wines have now acquired elite status among collectors. Its highly prized wines are crafted to perfection, displaying depth and succulence.

Tasting: The Echezeaux Grand Cru 2021, aged in 100% new oak, is tasted from two barrels, one being heavily reduced, the other presenting a beautiful delineation: crushed strawberries, wild mint and potting soil. The palate is initially strongly reduced, quite dense and broad-shouldered, black cherries mixed with blackcurrant, a little chocolatey on the finish. |
