Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru - Domaine Ponsot 2009
The domain
Domaine Ponsot is a family wine producer located in Burgundy. It is known for its red and white wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but also for the Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Clos des Monts Luisants, the only 100% Aligoté Premier Cru in Burgundy.
The estate was founded in 1872 by the Ponsot family in Morey-Saint-Denis. Most of the estate's properties are grand cru and premier cru vineyards, and the Ponsot family produces wines from such famous vineyards as Clos de la Roche, Clos de Vougeot and Corton.
Unlike most Burgundy houses, Domaine Ponsot does not produce regional wines under the Burgundy appellation. He also manages his vineyards and cellars differently from other Burgundy producers. There are no sorting tables - the management of the clusters is done in the vineyard. The wines undergo uncontrolled fermentations, and are neither filtered nor fined.
The domain gained some notoriety when it was implicated in the widespread fraud by counterfeiter Rudy Kurniawan. In 2008, owner Laurent Ponsot received an auction list that included older vintages of Ponsot wines. Some of these were wines that had never been produced, and suspecting counterfeiting, he requested that these wines be removed from the auction. Since then, Ponsot has studied various anti-counterfeiting measures and, in 2009, the bottles were identified by unique bubble codes that were impossible to reproduce.

Tasting: A superb Chambertin with delicate notes of ripe cherries and spices. A few floral notes lighten it all up. This beautiful aromatic complexity does not lose any of its energy on the palate with a fruity and delicate wine, with a slight taste of reflection on the palate.
